I have elaborated on al-Kindi's theory, whereby each planet is connected to a certain maqam (scale), and used the scales accordingly. Many historians who have documented the story of Damascus city, such as Ibn Asaaker (1105-1175 AD) in History of Damascus City (1995) describe the layout of the city and the location of the gates as being geographically arranged in alignment with the seven planets, in order to bring prosperity and protection to the city and its people. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

Travel video about destination Railroad to Damascus in Turkey. This extraordinary journey begins in Istanbul, golden gateway to the Orient and a city that was once the centre of the Old World, as reflected by its long history. The Turkish metropolis once had sonorous names such as Constantinople and Byzanz. This gateway between Europe and Asia is not only the biggest city in Turkey, but also a melting pot of various cultures. In 1453, the Hagia Sofia, one of the world’s most extraordinary churches, was transformed into a mosque by Sultan Mehmet and is now an impressive museum. The Grand Basare is a city within a city and through a large gate there is a labyrinth of corridors that were built over many centuries. On the magnificent banks of the Bosporus the Dolmabahce Palace shines out, the city’s third largest sultan’s palace. Istanbul’s regal buildings are the most beautiful legacy of Osmanic architecture. Next, a train journey from Istanbul to Damascus. The train slowly leaves Istanbul and travels into the night, our destination being the capital of Syria that is around three thousand kilometres away. Cappadocia in Anatolia is known for some of the largest and most beautiful fairy chimneys – a name given to its strange rock formations - in Cappadocia the sight of which was surely much appreciated by the first religious hermits who settled here inside the actual tuff cones. We eventually arrive in Damascus, capital of Syria and symbol of culture in the Near East, a veritable ‘paradise on earth’ situated a hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast. The train journey from Istanbul to Damascus has been tantamount to being a journey through the centuries. Slow, tranquil and intriguingly informative!

Travel video about destination Syria. Syria is an ancient country of culture located between the Mediterranean and the desert. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls and it was from there that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Khan As´Ad Pasha is often referred to as being the most beautiful caravansary in the Near East. Its inner courtyard is covered by eight mighty and partly painted cupolas each of which is supported by four pillars. Set amid the desert savannah of Syria are the proud remains of a unique and mysterious metropolis, Palmyra, a legendary ancient city that was built due to the existence of the Tadmur Oasis. The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there. Around a quarter of a million Bedouins live in Syria’s desert areas. They are nomads who speak Arabic and belong to the Muslim faith and their income is derived from sheep, goats and camels which produce both milk and meat. They travel the desert accompanied by their animals. Further north on the edge of the fertile Al Ghab Ditch is the ancient metropolis of Apameia, one of the most beautiful cities in the Near East. Apart from Bosra and Palmyra this huge city of ruins is one of the most important Hellenist regions in Syria. Syria is the Pearl Of The East. With deserts, wadis and mountains, castles and crusader fortresses, Roman ruins, palaces and mosques. A legendary country between both past and future whose cultural treasures still survive today.

'The Seven Gates of Damascus' from 'Syrian dreams' album I wrote this seven-section suite where each section corresponds to one of the gates of Damascus. It is not only that Damascus was built on the basis of these gates but also that the seven gates witnessed the history of the city from the day it was built, through the ages and until the present moment. Thus the seven gates of Damascus carry a deep historical and cultural value in Syria’s history. This suite was organised in the following order: Bab Al-Saghir, ‘The Small Gate’ (Jupiter-maqam Ushaq); Bab Kisan, ‘The Kisan Gate’; (Saturn- maqam Kurd); Bab Touma – ‘The Gate of St Thomas’ (Venus- Maqam Bayati/Saba); Bab Al-Jabiyah- ‘Gate of the Water Trough’ (Mars- maqam Hijaz); Bab Al-Faradis – The Gate of Paradise (Mercury- Huzzam); Bab Al-Salam – The Gate of Peace (Moon- maqam Nahawand); and Bab Sharqi ‘The Eastern Gate.’ (Sun- maqam Rast). The last gate (Bab Sharqi) is a Syrian folk tune which embodies Syrians’ love for life. The album 'Syrian Dreams' is This album is my personal journey through the 6 years of war in Syria. It is a translation of my memories of home and my feelings into music. I see the act of playing music as the opposite of death; it is a life and hope-affirming act. To me music is my healer and an antidote to what is happening, not only in Syria, but in the whole world. I like to think that my music brings people back to humanity and to their heart centres, where no harm can be done to any form of life and where all can exist together in peace. Syrian Dreams is released by Harmonia Mundi on 17th Nov 2017. The public has always misinterpreted how Syria is nowadays. That's why I decided to go on a mission and send them a message. My message is to fix the publics false image about Syria and show them the real beauty of the country by showing them a side that they have never seen; which is My side, my own perspective.

Unsurprisingly the war-torn Syria is not particularly popular with holiday makers at the moment, but one avid reviewer for a tourist website is continuing to write on, despite the current situation. He's posting the best places to hang-out in Damascus. RT's Lizzie Phelan met up with the American for his take on the capital's culinary offerings. (14 Oct 2016) LEAD IN A tamarind seller who travelled the world promoting the traditional Syrian drink is still working in the souks of Damascus. Abu Mohammad once visited more than thirty countries in a bid to boost tourism. STORY-LINE The sweet juicy tamarind has for centuries been sold in its fruit juice form by the juice vendors of Damascus. In the heat of this ancient Damascus market, Abu Mohammed, carrying his huge pitcher, knows the perfect way to stay refreshed. He serves tamarind, a traditional Syrian juice made from the sticky brown pulp from the tamarind tree, mixed with sugar and rose water. Not only does Abu Mohammed sell the cold drink, he accompanies his product with songs from Damascus folklore. So routed in Syrian history is the ancient tamarind drink that Abu Mohammed once took it around the world to promote Syrian tourism. "I visited thirty three Arab and foreign countries with the Ministry of Tourism to promote for Syria and for tourism in Syria. This is an ancient profession of Damascus, it is about eight or nine hundred years old. We used to have al Sakka in Damascus (a man who sells water in the old city) and that profession gradually evolved and takes this shape nowadays," he says. Dressed in folkloric costume, Abu Mohammed walks from his house in Al-Shaghour to stand in the middle of the crowd and sell his Tamarind. He washes his cups and pours juice for people before hiding the money inside his red fez. This is now his daily routine but he says his travelling days are now long behind him. "I come to the Al-Hamidiyah souk everyday. I used to travel when I was young, you can see I am old now," he smiles. Despite events elsewhere in Syria, for some people it is business as usual.
